MANSFIELD VICTORIAN HIGH COUNTRY MATERNITY SESSION - OVER GOLDEN & BLUE HOUR
The Victorian High Country is one of my favourite places to photograph maternity sessions. With never-ending hills, crips views, and that magical golden-hour light, it’s the perfect backdrop to capture the beauty of motherhood. Recently, I had the joy of photographing Natalee’s maternity session, and it couldn’t have been more perfect.

STARTING THE SESSION DOWN IN THE PADDOCKS
We began the afternoon at the bottom of the hill in a grass paddock. Sheep and lambs ran around us as the soft evening light filtered through a big gum tree nearby. It felt peaceful, natural, and very “High Country”, the kind of setting that makes you want to slow down and take it all in. This part of the session gave us those warm, rustic farm vibes that are so quintessential to regional Victoria. I always suggest photographing a few family portraits down at the bottom (especially if children are involved), as it tends to be a little chilly on top of the mountain.

A PERSONAL REFLECTION ON THE HIGH COUNTRY
One of the reasons I love photographing in the Victorian High Country is the feeling you get when you’re standing up high, looking out across the valleys and mountains. There’s a stillness and quietness up there that makes everything else fade away, it feels grounding, peaceful, and completely timeless. Pairing that sense of calm with the beauty of an expectant mother makes the images feel even more powerful. Every session I do here reminds me how lucky we are to have this landscape right on our doorstep.
A HIKE TO THE TOP OF THE HILL
As the sun began to dip, we made our way to the top of the hill. From there, the view opened up to rolling mountain ranges and the river winding through the valleys below. It was the perfect vantage point to create some truly dramatic maternity portraits, the kind of photos that make you stop and breathe them in. We photographed the last snipped of golden hour, and the sky gifted us with gorgeous purple & pink colour tones.
WARDROBE CHOICES THAT ELEVATED THE SESSION
Natalee’s styling was spot-on and gave us such variety in the gallery. She dressed in a fun double denim cowgirl look, complete with Ariat boots, her Stetson hat, a playful nod to her personality and the country setting. Then, she swapped into some of the pieces from my client wardrobe: a flowing dark brown dress that looked incredible against the golden light, and later, a soft beige two-piece set with an off-the-shoulder design.
Style tip: Flowing fabrics, earthy tones, and textured materials work beautifully in the High Country because they complement the landscape while allowing movement in your photos. Hats, boots, or layering pieces also add personality and a touch of storytelling to your session. If you’re not sure what to wear, my client wardrobe has carefully chosen dresses and outfits designed to flatter and photograph beautifully.
