lets plan your proposal

Planning a proposal is one of the most exciting moments of your life, and also one of the most nerve-wracking.

Between choosing the perfect location, figuring out the timing, and making sure your partner doesn’t suspect a thing, there’s a lot to think about. The good news? The Yarra Valley & Victorian High Country is one of the most romantic places in Victoria to propose, with beautiful vineyards, mountain views, and quiet scenic spots that create the perfect setting.

As a Yarra Valley proposal photographer, I’ve had the privilege of capturing some incredibly special “yes” moments, from surprise scenic proposals to quiet mountaintop moments.

If you're thinking about proposing in the Yarra Valley or Victorian High Country, here are a few tips to help you plan a proposal that feels natural, memorable, and completely unforgettable.

choose a meaningful location

The location sets the tone for the entire proposal.

The Yarra Valley offers some incredible backdrops, whether you're dreaming of a winery proposal, a scenic lookout, or on top of a mountain in the Victorian High Country. If you already have a meaningful location you'd love to propose at, absolutely perfect!

Some popular proposal locations include:

  • Yarra Valley wineries - Boat O Craigo
  • RJ Hamer, Olinda
  • Cathedral Ranges
  • Alpine National Park including areas like Craigs Hut, Dargo, Snowy River
  • Lake Mountain lookouts during Summer and snow season
  • Down by the beach

If you’re unsure where to propose, choosing somewhere with open views and beautiful natural light can make the moment even more special, and photograph beautifully too.

Plan the timing

Lighting can make a huge difference in how your proposal photos turn out.

The most beautiful light for photography is usually:

Golden hour, the hour before sunset.

Not only does this create soft, romantic lighting, but it also gives you a relaxed atmosphere where you can celebrate afterwards with a few engagement-style photos.

keep it simple

Many people feel pressure to create an elaborate proposal, but the truth is the most meaningful proposals are often the simplest.

Whether it’s a quiet moment during a walk, a scenic lookout stop, or a glass of wine at a vineyard, what matters most is that the moment feels authentic to your relationship.

Your partner will remember how it felt, not how complicated the plan was.

consider a proposal photographer

One thing many couples regret is not having the moment captured.

proposal photographer can discreetly document the surprise so you can relive the moment forever. Most people are so focused on the excitement that the moment flies by in seconds.

Having photos allows you to:

  • Relive the moment
  • Share the news with family and friends
  • Celebrate your engagement with beautiful images

During a proposal session, I usually stay hidden nearby and capture the moment naturally as it unfolds.

Once the big moment happens, it’s the perfect opportunity to capture a few relaxed & fun engagement photos while the excitement is still fresh.

These photos often become some of the most meaningful images couples have, filled with genuine smiles, laughter, and that “we just got engaged” glow.

adventure & destination proposals

Not every proposal needs to be a dressed-up event at a restaurant or winery.

Some of the most meaningful proposals happen in the middle of the things you already love doing together, camping under the stars, exploring the mountains, or chasing the snow during winter.

If your relationship is built around adventure, travel, and the outdoors, your proposal can reflect that too (like mine and my husband's is)

The Victorian High Country and surrounding alpine regions offer incredible settings for more personal, destination-style proposals. Imagine proposing:

  • in the snow at Lake Mountain or Mount Buller
  • during a sunrise hike in the Cathedral Ranges
  • on a quiet camping trip in the High Country
  • after a day of off-roading or exploring mountain tracks
  • beside a secluded alpine river or lookout

These kinds of proposals feel relaxed, natural, and completely true to who you are as a couple.

As a photographer who spends a lot of time exploring the Yarra Valley and Victorian High Country, I love helping couples plan proposals that feel adventurous and meaningful rather than overly staged. Whether that means 4wding to a lookout, finding a quiet forest clearing, or meeting you at a snowy alpine location, the goal is always the same, to capture the moment as it genuinely unfolds.

Sometimes the most unforgettable proposals aren’t the most elaborate ones.

They’re the ones that feel like you.
