IS TRAVELLING TO A NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY SESSION REALLY WORTH IT?
If you've found yourself falling in love with a photographer's work, only to realise they're an hour or more away, you're not alone.
In fact, one of the most common messages I receive from expecting parents is:
"I absolutely love your work, but I'm worried about the drive with a newborn."
As a newborn photographer based in Buxton, Victoria, I welcome families from the Yarra Valley, Mansfield, Seymour, Alexandra, Healesville, Yea, Melbourne and throughout the Victorian High Country. Many travel an hour or more to visit my country studio.
And I completely understand the hesitation.
As a second-time mum myself, I know that leaving the house with a newborn can feel like preparing for a major expedition. Add a toddler into the mix, and suddenly the thought of a longer drive can feel overwhelming.
So let's talk about it.
WHAT IF MY BABY SLEEPS THE ENTIRE DRIVE?
This is, without a doubt, the question I hear most often.
The good news?
It's absolutely okay if your baby sleeps the whole way here.
Babies don't follow a script.
Some arrive fast asleep and continue snoozing through much of their session. Others arrive wide awake and curious about the world around them. Both are completely normal.
Your newborn session isn't built around your baby arriving in a particular mood or at a particular stage of their sleep cycle.
There is plenty of time for feeding, cuddles, settling and simply following your baby's lead.
There is no pressure.
You don't need to keep your baby awake in the car.
You don't need to stress if things don't go to plan.
You simply arrive.
I'll take care of the rest.
It's such a long day with a newborn.
I know.
Those early weeks can feel exhausting.
You're recovering, adjusting to life with a new baby, navigating broken sleep and learning a whole new rhythm as a family.
But so many parents tell me afterwards that their session didn't feel like another item on the to-do list.
Instead, it felt like a little escape.
A scenic drive through the countryside.
A reason to get out of the house. (most of the time this helps a lot with postpartum stress)
A few uninterrupted hours where someone else takes care of the details while they simply soak in this quick season of life.
Years from now, you probably won't remember the drive.
But you'll remember the photographs hanging on your walls.
You'll remember how tiny they were.
You'll remember the way they curled perfectly into your chest.
You'll remember that, despite the exhaustion, you chose to preserve these moments before they slipped away.
What if my toddler can't cope?
If you're bringing an older sibling along, this concern can feel even bigger than the drive itself.
The truth is, toddlers aren't designed to sit still for hours.
And I don't expect them to.
One of the beautiful things about our Buxton studio is that there is space for children to simply be children.
Between photographs, they can:
- Jump on the trampoline.
- Say hello to the sheep and chickens.
- Explore the outdoors.
- Have snack breaks.
- Take time with Dad or another support person before joining back in when they're ready.
There is no expectation of perfection.
We embrace the beautifully imperfect reality of family life.
Because often, those in-between moments become the memories you'll treasure most.
You Don't Need to Have It All Together
One of the biggest misconceptions about newborn sessions is that parents need to arrive organised, polished and perfectly prepared.
You don't.
You don't need to clean the house.
You don't need to pack endless props.
You don't need a baby who sleeps on cue.
You don't need a toddler who smiles on command.
You don't even need to remember everything.
As a mum of two, I know that simply getting everyone dressed and into the car can feel like an achievement.
That's exactly why every part of this experience has been thoughtfully designed to make things easier.
What to Expect When You Arrive
When you arrive at our peaceful country studio in Buxton, Victoria, you'll be welcomed into a calm, unhurried space designed with growing families in mind.
There is time to settle in.
Time to feed your baby.
Time for nappy changes.
Time for cuddles.
You'll find practical comforts, too, because I know firsthand that sometimes it's the little things that matter most:
- Easy parking.
- A comfortable space to sit and rest.
- Tea, coffee and cold water.
- A change table.
- Baby wipes and spare supplies.
- Snacks for little ones.
- Toys and space for siblings to play.
This isn't about rushing through a checklist.
It's about slowing down long enough to remember what matters.
So, Is It Worth Travelling for a Newborn Photographer?
If you're simply searching for the closest photographer, perhaps not.
But if you're looking for a newborn photographer in the Yarra Valley, Mansfield, Seymour or surrounding regions who understands this season of life and has intentionally created an experience that feels calm, supportive and deeply personal, then yes.
It is absolutely worth the drive.
Because the newborn stretches fade.
The tiny fingers grow.
The sleepy sighs become distant memories.
And one day, these photographs will become some of the most treasured heirlooms your family owns.
If you're expecting and considering a newborn session at our Buxton studio, I hope this reassures you that you don't have to have it all figured out.
You don't need to arrive with a perfectly sleeping baby or perfectly behaved children.
You simply need to show up exactly as you are.
I'll take care of the rest.
