Teeny tiny oliver with his new parents with 10 tips to prepare for your newborn session

There’s something truly magical about a newborn session. The soft lighting, the peaceful stillness, and the delicate little details that make each tiny moment so precious. Recently, I had the absolute pleasure of photographing the sweet and sleepy Oliver Miles and his wonderful parents in the Healesville Studio, and it was such a beautiful experience. Newborn sessions are always so special, and this one was no exception. Oliver, at just a week old, was as peaceful and snuggly as could be. His parents, new to this parenting adventure, were so calm and relaxed, making the entire session feel effortless. Oliver slept through the whole session (yes, all of it!), which is one of the most wonderful things about newborn photography. There’s no need to rush or force anything. It’s about going with the flow and embracing the quiet, tender moments.

In our sessions, I always encourage parents to come with no expectations. Babies are unpredictable, and sometimes things don’t go exactly as planned. Maybe baby needs a little extra time to settle, or maybe there’s a break for some cuddles. That’s okay! What matters most is capturing the pure essence of those early days—those fleeting moments of tiny hands, wriggling toes, and soft breaths. And that’s exactly what we did for Oliver and his family.

From the delicate outfits and props from PrincessPeaProps to the warm and cozy atmosphere in the Healesville studio, it was the perfect setting to celebrate this new chapter in their lives. The images captured from this session reflect the beauty and serenity of those early days, and I couldn’t be more grateful to have been a part of it.

If you’re expecting this year, I would absolutely love to chat with you about your maternity and newborn session. It’s such a beautiful journey, and I would be honored to document these precious moments for you. Whether it’s the anticipation of the maternity session or the peaceful newborn photos, these are memories you’ll cherish forever. 💛

10 tips to help prepare for your newborn session

Welcoming a newborn is such an exciting and emotional time, and documenting these early days is something you’ll cherish forever. To make sure your newborn session goes smoothly and you get the best possible images, here are 10 tips to help you prepare:

1. Keep Baby’s Feeding Schedule in Mind

  • A well-fed baby is a sleepy baby! Try to plan the session for a time when your little one will be relaxed and content. If possible, feed baby right before the session starts to ensure they're full and happy.

2. Dress Comfortably

  • For both parents and baby, comfort is key. Stick to simple, neutral clothing for a timeless look that doesn’t distract from the baby. A loose, soft outfit for parents is ideal—something you can easily change out of if needed!

3. Choose the Right Time for the Session

  • Newborn sessions are typically best within the first 10 days of life, when babies are still very sleepy and flexible. However, if that doesn’t work for you, we can still get amazing images a little later. Just make sure to book early to secure your spot!

4. Plan for Plenty of Time

  • Newborn sessions can take a few hours, so be prepared for a relaxed, unhurried session. Babies may need extra time for feeding or comfort, and that’s totally normal! We’ll take breaks when needed, so come with a relaxed mindset.

5. Bring Baby’s Favorite Comfort Items

  • If your baby has a favorite blanket, pacifier, or stuffed animal, bring it along! It can help settle them and also adds a personal touch to the photos.

6. Let Your Baby Be the Boss

  • We’ll follow your baby’s cues throughout the session. If they need a little extra love, a nap, or some time to calm down, that’s perfectly fine. The most important thing is capturing the authentic moments, not forcing a specific pose or schedule.

7. Warm Up the Room

  • Newborns are often more comfortable in warmer environments. To make sure your baby is cozy, we’ll heat the studio or your home in advance. Bring a warm blanket for yourself as well—you may want to cuddle up too!

8. Take Care of the Little Details

  • Don’t forget to check the basics—change baby’s diaper just before the session, and have a few extra diapers and wipes on hand. You may also want to bring an extra outfit for baby just in case of any messes.

9. Relax and Enjoy the Moment

  • While we’re working to capture these memories, take the time to soak in the experience with your newborn. Relax, smile, and let the love shine through in the photos. The best images come when you’re enjoying the moment together.

10. Expect a Guide

  • When you book your newborn session, you’ll receive a Newborn Session Guide to help you prepare. This guide provides more specific details on what to expect, tips for the session, and how to make the most of your time with us.
