Everything You Need to Know About Booking a Newborn Photographer in the Yarra Valley, Mansfield & North East Victoria

Welcoming a new baby into your family is one of life's most extraordinary moments. In what feels like the blink of an eye, your tiny newborn changes and grows, those curled-up sleepy stretches unfold, tiny fingers lose their newborn wrinkles, and the familiar weight of them resting on your chest slowly becomes a memory.

Newborn photography is about preserving this season. It's about remembering not only what your baby looked like, but what it felt like to be completely wrapped up in those beautiful early days of parenthood.

If you're expecting and searching for a newborn photographer in the Yarra Valley, Mansfield, Seymour, or North East Victoria, this guide will answer some of the most common questions parents ask before booking.

When should I book yarra valley images as my newborn photographer?

The best time to book your newborn session is during pregnancy, ideally at the beginning of your second trimester, as I only take a limited number of newborn sessions each month. This allows flexibility for babies arriving early, late, or exactly when expected.

Rather than booking a fixed session date, your place in my calendar is reserved around your due date. Once your little one arrives, we'll confirm the perfect time for your session together.

What age is best for newborn photos?

Newborn sessions are typically photographed within the first 7–14 days after birth.

During this stage, babies tend to be sleepier and naturally settle into those beautiful curled-up positions that parents often love. Their tiny features are still fresh and new, making it a wonderful time to document all of those precious details.

However, please don't worry if your baby has already arrived or if life feels a little overwhelming in those early weeks. Beautiful newborn photographs can absolutely be captured beyond this timeframe. Every baby is different, and your session will always be tailored to your little one's needs.

What happens during a newborn session?

My newborn sessions take place in my cozy Buxton studio, conveniently located for families travelling from across the Yarra Valley, Mansfield, Seymour, Alexandra, Marysville, Yea, and throughout North East Victoria.

These sessions are calm, relaxed, and completely baby-led.

There is never any rushing. We allow plenty of time for feeding, settling, cuddles, nappy changes, and simply following your baby's cues.

I'll gently guide the session while creating a peaceful environment where you can sit back, relax, and soak up this special season of life.

Will parents and siblings be included?

Absolutely.

Your newborn session includes more than just portraits of your baby.

Parent photographs, sibling images, and family portraits are all encouraged and included. These are often the photographs that become the most treasured over time, the way your toddler proudly held their new baby brother, the tiny hand wrapped around your finger, the look of complete love on your partner's face.

While babies change quickly, so do families. These images tell the story of where your family began.

What style of newborn photography do you offer?

My style is natural, timeless, and connection-focused.

I take a relaxed and loving approach that prioritises your baby's comfort and safety at every stage of the session.

You'll receive a beautiful blend of:

  • Individual portraits of your newborn
  • Family photographs
  • Parent portraits with your baby
  • Sibling images
  • Detail photographs of tiny fingers, little toes, eyelashes, and wisps of hair
  • A mixture of gently guided portraits and genuine, heartfelt moments

More than anything, I want your photographs to feel authentic to your family and to preserve not only how your baby looked, but how these early days felt.

What should we wear to our newborn session?

Outfits for newborns and mamas are all apart of the session, however if mums wanted to bring their own outfit along, soft, neutral tones photograph beautifully and help keep the focus on your connection as a family.

Creams, whites, oatmeal, soft greys, earthy tones, muted greens, dusty blues, and gentle blush tones all work wonderfully.

I recommend avoiding large logos, bright patterns, and neon colours, as these can distract from the timeless feel of your images.

Comfort is key. Choose clothing that allows you to cuddle, snuggle, and move naturally with your baby.

What if my baby arrives early or late?

Babies rarely arrive exactly on schedule, and that's completely expected.

Because your session is booked around your estimated due date, I build flexibility into my calendar to accommodate those unexpected arrivals.

Once your baby is here, simply send me a message and we'll arrange your session date together.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can older babies still have newborn photos?

Yes. While the first two weeks are often ideal for sleepy portraits, older newborns can still be beautifully photographed. Awake expressions, stretches, and connection-focused images are equally meaningful.

How long does a newborn session last?

Most newborn sessions last between two and three hours, allowing plenty of time to work around your baby's needs.

Do siblings need to sit still?

Not at all. Young children are wonderfully unpredictable, and I approach sibling photographs with patience, flexibility, and plenty of encouragement.

What if my baby cries?

Crying, feeding, cuddling, and settling are all part of a newborn session. There is absolutely no expectation for your baby to "perform." We'll simply follow their lead

Preserving the little moments

The newborn stage is beautiful and quick.

One day you'll miss the way they curled perfectly against your chest, the softness of their tiny cheeks, and the way their fingers instinctively wrapped around yours.

These photographs become more than images on a wall or in an album. They become reminders of a season that passes far too quickly, a way to revisit the wonder, tenderness, and overwhelming love of welcoming your baby into the world.

If you're looking for a newborn photographer in the Yarra Valley, Mansfield, Seymour, Alexandra, Marysville, or North East Victoria, I'd be honoured to help you preserve these memories for your family.
